Representatives of Green Parties from East African countries have proposed that the regional headquarters of the Green Party be established in Kigali, Rwanda, citing the country’s stability, peace, sustainable development, and good governance.

This proposal was reiterated on Saturday, July 26, 2025, during a high-level meeting held in Kigali. The gathering brought together members of various Green Parties committed to environmental protection and regional cooperation.
The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration among Green Parties across the region to address pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable policies that benefit both party members and the broader population.
Anne Marie Bihirabake, a Green Party representative from Burundi, highlighted key topics of the meeting, including climate change mitigation, environmental preservation, and strategies for strengthening the Green Party’s influence in the region.
“We want everyone to rise and work together to develop their countries and safeguard the region,” she said. “We must also raise awareness and ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against climate change.”
Mohamed Mohamoud, the Green Party leader in Somalia, strongly endorsed the idea of relocating the party’s regional headquarters to Kigali.

“Rwanda continues to lead by example in promoting democracy, diversity, and environmental protection,” he noted. “It would be ideal to have the headquarters here, where there is peace, good governance, and inclusive development. We highly commend Rwanda’s leadership and progressive policies.”
Hon. Dr. Frank Habineza, President of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, welcomed the proposal, stating that hosting the regional headquarters would have far-reaching benefits.

“This will allow Rwanda to host major Green Party activities, potentially positioning Kigali as a continental hub for green initiatives. It’s not just for the party; it will positively impact the wider population,” he said.
The two-day conference drew participants from Green Parties in Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, and Somalia, and served as a platform for exchanging ideas on regional environmental priorities and the future of the Green movement in East Africa.
