The leadership of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) announced that preliminary statistics from a survey on people with disabilities showed that there are 562,184 people with disabilities in Rwanda.

The Executive Secretary of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Ndayisaba Emmanuel, reiterated this on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the NCPD’s Ordinary General Meeting at the National Level.

He stressed that the relevant authorities are currently refining the information so that it will be published in full in the coming days. He said: “We have collected the information, we are currently reviewing it to see if there are any corrections.

We are doing this in collaboration with the Districts where we find any inaccuracies and we will inform them and have them correct them. The preliminary figures show that we counted more than 562,000 people in total.

No information on their welfare has been released. Ndayisaba told the media that after knowing the welfare of people with disabilities, it will remove obstacles that were hindering those who wanted to help them in development.

He said: “It was difficult to know what category I wanted to help, usually when you are going to help people with disabilities you look at where the problems are. The fact that people did not see it in the same way was difficult.”

We have summarized the main findings from the research on people with disabilities in Rwanda.

He stressed that when these figures are published, they will be put in an electronic system so that anyone who wants to provide them with support will find it easier.

These figures show that in Rwanda, 145,362 people with disabilities, or 25.8%, are employed, while 317,360, or 56.4%, are unemployed. This is while 99,462, or 17.7%, do not have sufficient information about them.
